It started with an innocent looking post back in early August of a dad building the LEGO Disney Castle (71040) for his kids. However, that’s where the normal part of this story stops, as the dad in question was David Beckham with 54 million followers on Facebook – 54 MILLION!
Now of course us die hard AFOL’s we look at the picture and we see all kinds of wrong – Evil UV light (poor old white elements), squishy build surface and a backache in the making, but remember let’s be kind (especially on Father’s Day – Oz) this is just a dad getting stuck in for his kids.
Considering his lifestyle David Beckham followed up with a picture of the completed LEGO Disney Castle a respectable 6 days later. The picture generated a crazy half a million likes, a flurry of comments, thousands of shares and LEGO bloggers like myself sharing the images to all our followers. Now if you are LEGO what goes through your mind? One thing comes to my mind marketing and the ability to lean on David Beckham’s massive social media reach!
Well it seems that David Beckham didn’t go unnoticed and as a gesture of thanks for the publicity LEGO kindly sent David Beckham a LEGO Ninjago City 70620 set – Thanks LEGO.
Though this recent hysteria started with the LEGO Disney Castle, David Beckham admitted in an interview way back in 2010 that he was a big fan of LEGO and that it helped him distress. Back then he was discussing his purchase of the LEGO Taj Mahal (10189) – I know envious some!
Anyway will be interesting to see if we see more of David Beckham and LEGO in the future 🙂
