After a great marketing campaign by LEGO with teaser posters and the likes, the 17th approved LEGO Ideas project – 21309 NASA APOLLO SATURN V is ready for blast off. The SATURN V Rocket is brainchild of Felix Stiessen (saabfan) and Valerie Roche (whatsuptoday) and is the largest LEGO Ideas set to hit the shops to date (Old Fishing Store likely to take the title soon).
Like the real thing this rocket is whooping and stands at an impressive 1 metre tall (~1:110 scale) and will definitely make a big impact wherever this bad boy is displayed! To achieve this feat the set consists of 1969 pieces a nice subtle shout out to the date of the lunar landing. The set will go on general release from the 1st of June and retail at USD $119.99 / GBP £109.99. No news on Australian price yet. With the new LEGO Carousel 10257 I might need to raid the savings account – Ouch!
If height is an issue when displaying this set, LEGO have kindly offered us an alternative solution by displaying horizontally with supplied little blue stands. This also has the added bonus of representing each of the Rocket and Lander stages.
If the shear size wasn’t enough, true to the original design LEGO has kept and perfected the various rocket and lander stages. The real surprise comes when you jettison the nose cone of the Rocket to reveal the Lander in microscale.
Of course the Lunar lander needs the three famous astronauts – Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. LEGO has cleverly added these utilising microfigures and what I believe is a first, exclusively printed to look like astronauts. For their size they have certainly packed in some very fine detail and look awesome!
The final cherry on the top is the return capsule with floatation marking the splashdown of the returning astronauts.
For me personally this set excites me and I have followed it from the early days of being posted on LEGO Ideas seeking support. Other than my family (of course) the two other loves in my life are space and LEGO, so a match made in heaven for me! Price is reasonable when you consider the piece count, nice printed elements and overall wow factor.
Any other fans? Will this be gracing your home display anytime soon? As always love to hear you comments and feedback on this set.
