“Surf Rescue” is one of those few Ideas that I’ve run on blog on previously. The home grown Ozzy idea is based around our iconic red and yellow Surf Rescue (Surf Life Saving) that patrol and keep our beaches safe. However, this idea goes deeper and contains an important message around being sunsmart – Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat, Slip, Slop, Slap!
Surf Rescue was tracking well and would have eventually hit 10,000 supporters, however the creator (LegoSurfRescue) who is battling skin cancer himself took a turn for the worst and was sadly informed he likely had 6 weeks to live (a week ago). After hearing this news he reached out to the AFOL community and asked for help to get his idea over the line sooner, so he could enjoy the achievement with his co creator – Son. I’m pleased to say the AFOL community did respond and helped Surf Rescue to go from the 3,000’s to 10,000 in 4 days!
Surf Rescue while simple is so perfectly designed to capture modern beach life in Oz (even has a new shark spotting drone). Some of the highlights include an iconic Patrol Tower, safe swim flags, inflatable rib, quad bike, Surf Rescue team, beachside amenities and of course a great white shark ready to munch on a surfer or two.
Surf Rescue joins a strong pack, but being a relatively simple and potential mass appeal set, hopefully the review panel will approve the design. Would also be great for LEGO to promote the strong sunsmart message as part of the set release. This shouldn’t jeopardize other strong candidates as the the review panel has approved multiple sets previously.
“Surf Rescue” is the tenth LEGO Idea to make the first 2017 review panel followed by “Sega Classic Arcade Games”, “The Blues Mobile“, “Dungeon Master”, “Red Arrow Hawk”, “Venetian Houses“, “Jeep Wrangler Rubicon”, “NBC’s The Office”, “Tron Legacy Light Cycle” and “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers“.
