To start with I was hoping to have already reviewed LEGO 40221 Creator Fountain and LEGO 60134 City Fun in the Park. However Australian Customs have held up my package from the LEGO online shop. They must have X-rayed the package and saw it contained a hot dog and a croissant. I suppose I can’t knock them for not being thorough even if they are plastic!
Anyway back to the review, while shopping with the kids I spotted a great little LEGO car and caravan set (60117). I thought this would be a perfect addition to the park scene I’m creating and to sweeten the offer it was $22 at my local Toy World (normal retail $29.95).
The set was released January 2016 and forms part of the city theme (camping sub-theme).
As with most modern LEGO sets the contents are tightly packed in the box. The Box contains two instruction booklets (1 x car and 1 x caravan build) and 3 numbered bags that contain 249 pieces.
The two minifigures are currently unique to this set. The female camper is the standout of the two, with hair and a printed torso that puts it above other minifigures in the city line. The dog while cute is a little disappointing. The main issue is the fixed head section that screams out to be moved up and down (pivoted). How else is the poor bugger suppose to get its bone (or a sneaky sausage)!
The car was relatively simple to make and proportion is fairly good with both minifigures and the dog able to fit inside. The other point to note is the wheels don’t stick out (my personal gripe with other cars/vans in the city line) and look more realistic.
The caravan is where the magic begins and really completes the set. Straight away you can see the iconic shape of the caravan as you build it. Detail inside is a tad basic and the bed only fits 1? (not too sure where those LEGO no. 2’s go or how you wash your hands either), but for the size and price point I’m not sure you could squeeze much more in.
As you would expect both car and caravan connect together very easily and wheel movement is spot on with caravan balanced while pulling the car.
Overall not a bad build and the playability of the set is great for little ones who want to run away with their imaginations. After all there is only some many fires you can put out or criminals you can lock up!
Final Rating: 7 out of 10
